Dalian Atkinson Taser trial: Police officer charged with murder of ex-Aston Villa footballer – live updates

A police officer is standing trial accused of the murder of the former Aston Villa star Dalian Atkinson.

Pc Benjamin Monk, 42, is alleged to have discharged a Taser at Atkinson after being called to an address in Telford at 1.30am on Aug 15, 2016.

The former footballer later died in hospital and the murder case is the first in the UK involving the use of a Taser by a police officer.

The 42-year-old officer was charged in 2019 with murder and an alternative charge of manslaughter after an inquiry into Atkinson’s death.

Pc Monk’s West Mercia Police colleague Pc Mary Ellen Bettley-Smith, is charged with actual bodily harm (ABH) assault.

Pc Monk entered formal not guilty pleas over the alleged murder and manslaughter. Pc Bettley-Smith, 31, has pleaded not guilty to a charge alleging she assaulted Mr Atkinson, 48, occasioning actual bodily harm before his death.
